Musician and actor Mpho Majiga is quickly emerging as the next king of disco on the South African music scene. The position became available after the passing of the late, self-styled king of disco, the legendary Dan Tshanda.
Meeting the late Tshanda in 2010 was a turning point in Majiga’s life as Tshanda had a significant influence on his music career. They travelled throughout the country and performed internationally in countries such as Botswana.
“Through Tshanda, I realised my dream of performing outside of Mzansi. It was a great joy working with such a powerful producer who managed many groups in his Dalom stable. We shared a brotherly working relationship, and I learned a lot from him. I am who I am today because of him,” he said. After Tshanda’s passing, Majiga worked within the Dalom stable for a year before moving on to pursue a successful solo career.
Majiga, who has worked with reputable producers such as Jabu Nkabinde, recently released a powerful full album titled “Khumbul’ekhaya”. On the album, which is in typical Tshanda style, he features his hit song “Tshiginga”. It also includes other hits such as “Shumela Venda”, “Thank You Lord”, and “Khongela”. The album was recorded at Faceoff Studios in Pretoria and released in March. He collaborated with Magdeline Mahlangu from the Tshwane Gospel Choir and Tshepiso Maile, one of the fastest-growing podcast queens.
“The album is making waves locally and internationally, and I am already being regarded as the second-best disco producer after my late mentor, Dan Tshanda. The response I am receiving from fans is overwhelming. I have taken up the baton, and I know Tshanda would be happy,” Majiga said.
Majiga is not only a talented musician but also a refined actor who has appeared in major national soap operas such as Generations, Muvhango, Skeem Saam, and Moja Love. His love of music began in his school days, when he was a choir leader. His music is available on all digital platforms.
